I had to bring it up sometime.
Probably one of the most difficult facets of our lives to live out intentionally (especially for me), is finances.
Money is a sneaky little thing. Like any other resource you have (time, talent, energy, etc.), if you don’t tell it where to go and what to do for you, it will take over your life.
So this weekend, let’s take a stab at taming our finances.
I’m not going to give you a step-by-step tutorial this time, because gaining control over your finances isn’t a simple DIY project. But this week’s weekend challenge is simple:
Take 1 hour to sit down and have a serious talk with yourself about money.
Identify where you are unsatisfied or in trouble. Is it debt? Paid subscriptions? Magazines? A shopping habit? Be honest with yourself about what needs to change. Then, take daily, intentional baby steps to change it.
Here are some tips:
Know where your money is going.
If you only have a vague idea of where our money is going, you’re not alone. Expense tracking can be burdensome, and many of our lives are moving so fast, we can’t keep up with our bills, let alone our spending.
The first step to being in control of your money is to know where it’s going. There are free apps and websites that can help you track and determine what bills, monthly subscriptions, etc., come out of your each month, but I prefer a more holistic approach. We are constantly bombarded with emails and notifications – for me, adding yet another app that will email and/or notify me multiple times a day is not the best approach to tracking finances.
Know what you want from your finances.
It’s important to have a financial vision for yourself and/or your family. Without an idea of where you want to go, how do you expect to get anywhere? Spend some time really thinking about where you want to be financially, and then figure out what steps you need to take to get there.
Cut the slack.
Once you figure out where your money is going, set some boundaries in place so that you can redirect funds from things you don’t want or need to the things that are important to you.
It’s better to make small changes consistently than big ones you can’t stick with. Decide what you’re going to do, and stick with it!
